Many civilizations have come and gone. Many wars and great
battles have been fought; some were won and others were lost, some were fought
for power others were fought for love. Whatsoever the reasons for these battles
there is one thing common to all of them, many lives were lost and several
millions of souls perished.
Many great empires have risen and fallen, many great
inventions that could be regarded as state of the art in their day are now
totally obsolete. Many people have broken out from oblivion into prominence
while others have nosedived and plunged into the unknown, all these in what
seems to be in a twinkling of the eyes.
IS LIFE WORTH LIVING ? 2
In all of these happenings, most people never stop for once
and ask themselves these three basic questions of life namely:
1. Where are we [men] coming from?
2. What are we doing here on planet
earth?
3. Where are we going to after now?
As an extension to these three
questions, we can add the following in one piece: What are the true values of
life? What are those things that produce that satisfaction, that inner joy of
mind and peace of spirit one truly craves for but hardly ever finds? Can one
truly be happy on this earth, or are there some other things hidden from the
generality of the people of earth, a secret known to only a few of the
Earthlings?
IS LIFE WORTH LIVING? 3
I wake up in the morning and I take a
walk into the streets. I see a lot of cheerful smiling faces happy and content
with their lot in life. Similarly I see a greater majority of people with a
frown in their faces totally disillusioned wondering seriously what this thing
we call living is all about.
Then as i walk further I see a lot of
people who in one minute are happy chanting “I love you” and the next minute
are in deep pain caused by heartbreak as a result of infidelity from their
partner. I walk forward to the market place and the hustling and burstling from
both customers and sellers is in high gear each hoping to make a profit but at
the end of the day’s proceedings many have succeeded in making only a loss.

Finally I take a walk to the hospital
en route to the tombs. I see a large mass of suffering humanity each one of
them desperately in need of serious medical attention. Feeling greatly
disturbed by their plight, I take a walk to the final destination: The grave
yard and I see the tombs of men who have gone ahead of us into the after life
and I ask myself, “ Is this the end of all our struggles, sorrows and pains?
What about the love we shared, what
about the beautiful promises made, what about the efforts in sacrificing our
fellow man for money making rituals, what about our embezzling skills in
corruptingly enriching ourselves? “Is this life really worth living?” so I ask
myself.
